カッパドキアの不思議な形をした岩山郡は、何百万年も前の火山活動で積もった火山灰が固まってできた「凝灰岩（ぎょうかいがん）」という柔らかい岩でできています。

そのため昔の人々は、この岩を掘って住居や教会、倉庫などを作り、実際に生活していました。

現在の洞窟ホテルの多くは、新しく作られたものではなく、こうした歴史ある岩窟住居を改装してホテルとして再生したものだそうです。

洞窟には天然の断熱効果があり、 夏は涼しく冬は暖かい。
大昔エアコンがなかった時代にはこの住居が特に重宝したと思います。

Caves have natural insulation properties, making them cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

I imagine these dwellings were especially valuable in the distant past, before air conditioning existed.

Now, those cave dwellings are being transformed into luxury hotels by:

- Installing plumbing
- Running electricity
- Installing underfloor heating
- Creating bathrooms
and so on.

Therefore, the interior is now incredibly comfortable.
