Last night I went to Fukinuki, an eel restaurant in Akasaka.
Founded in 1923 (Taisho 12), it's an incredibly long-established restaurant, celebrating its 103rd anniversary this year!
The name "Fukinuki" is written as "富貴貫" and apparently means "to uphold nobility."
What's not widely known about this restaurant is that it's actually a pioneer of "Kanto-style hitsumabushi."
While hitsumabushi is usually associated with Nagoya, Fukinuki is famous for its "Kanto-style hitsumabushi," made with Edo-style eel that is steamed before being grilled.
I also tried hitsumabushi last night, rather than unaju (eel served in a box).
